CT6007 - Individual Research Project

This project was one of two final assignments undertaken while studying at University of Gloucestershire. We were tasked with taking upon a research study with a deliverable component to aid our findings. The research and deliverables topic were for us to choose - so long as it related to one of the many fields we had covered during our studies.

From this, I chose to ask the question:

Should the Save Icon & Other user interface symbols be updated for the next generation of “Internet of Things” users?

The research paper eventually became:

An Investigation into Alternative Icons Designs and the Resultant Impact on ‘Millennial’ Users Understanding Updated Visual Language

Doing some of my own research into the origins of various different application icons as well as icons which serve a specialised purpose, I decided to put together a mood board to help myself visualise what icons I wanted to make adjustments for and those which I didn't. This also helped me to decide on a visual style for any new icons I would then create.
From here, I decided to create a proof of concept/mock-up icon for the Phone application which we see on modern day smartphones.
Above-Left: Apple iOS Phone application icon.
Above-Right: Proof-of-Concept Phone icon.

From here, I continued to create more icons alongside the research for the project. An icon sheet (Work in progress) can be seen below.

Eventually all the icons for the project would be created and finalised.

All "Application" icons are in colour to depict how they would be displayed on a smartphone's Home Screen or a PC's Desktop icon.

All "Application Functions" icons have a colour & B/W version. This is to demonstrate the icon when it has been restricted from use. i.e. when the icon has been "greyed out".
